After a turbulent start to the year with schools closed and teaching taken online, things have returned to a new normal routine for teachers, pupils, and parents.

Schools re-opened for all students on March 8, albeit with Covid safety measures in place such as obligatory lateral flow tests for pupils and staff as well as compulsory mask-wearing for all those in secondary schools.

While the necessity for weekly lateral flow tests for students remains, Boris Johnson announced earlier this month that face masks would no longer be required for secondary schools pupils in classrooms from May 17.

With the end of another difficult school year looming, when is the last half term of the academic year?

In England and Wales, the final half-term break of the academic year is set to start on Monday 31 May and last for one week.

In Scotland, most schools are off on Friday, May 28, and Monday, May 31 – but this will vary across councils.

Most schools in Northern Ireland will take May 31 off, too.

School terms vary across the home nations, and also across their respective councils, so to be sure, check out your local council’s website.

So far this year students in England have had a February half term and the Easter break holiday, a two-week period spanning from around April 1 to April 16.

When students go back to school after the late May/early June half term, they will be in class until the end of the school year, which will be around Monday 26 July 2021.
