‘The portraits are of people that lived and worked within a few square miles in the quiet, unremarkable town in the Midlands where I lived. I never set out to photograph a sociological cross-section of ages or types of people – the group that finally emerged [in my images] was mainly of colleagues and their children, students, people connected with a mental health organisation, relatives and friends’
