Glenn Hoddle advises Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to play Aaron Wan-Bissaka at centre-back in a back three for Manchester United

Glenn Hoddle says he would ‘love’ to see Aaron Wan-Bissaka switch positions from a full-back to a centre-back in a back three for Manchester United.

The Red Devils suffered their third defeat of the Premier League season as they were beaten 1-0 by Arsenal at Old Trafford on Sunday.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer started with the diamond midfield shape that was so effective in United’s 5-0 victory over RB Leipzig in the Champions League last week, but it failed to have the same impact against the Gunners.

Arsenal’s midfield duo of Thomas Partey and Mohamed Elneny overran the Red Devils in the middle of the park and caused Solskjaer to switch to a 4-2-3-1 formation for the second half.

And former England and Tottenham midfielder Hoddle feels Wan-Bissaka had too much attacking responsibility in the diamond system, and admitted he wants to see the solid full-back line up as a right-sided centre-back in a back three system.

‘If you’re playing with a diamond your full-backs have got to be really good players on the ball,’ Hoddle told Premier League Productions.

‘Wan-Bissaka is one of the best defenders in the league, there’s no doubt about that. Is he the best in the attacking third in the opponents half? No he’s not.

‘But he’s going to end up with a lot of the ball, if they’re so tight in midfield they’re going to end up playing to their full-backs.

‘They’ve been inconsistent in the shapes that they’ve been playing. He’s trying to find a spine and his best shape.

‘Wan-Bissaka in a back three would work for me as the right-sided centre back. I would love to see him play there, I think he’d be brilliant there.‘

‘But then you’re changing the shape of your whole team, he has played three at the back this year and he could play that.’
