Emily Ratajkowski opens up about sustainability, women's rights and her secrets for great hair

She’s as well known for her Instagram posing as she is her women’s rights campaigning, but no one can deny that model, actress and activist Emily Ratajkowski means business.

Not only has she launched her wildly successful swimwear and lingerie brand Inamorata, she’s also appeared in three films in the past year as well as being the face of luxury haircare brand Kérastase, appearing in their most recent campaign for revolutionary in-salon restorative treatment, K-Water.

Here, GLAMOUR catches up with the modern-day mogul on all things hair, feminism and sustainability.

“Great hair makes me feel free”

We all know what its like to have a bad hair day. Earlier this year, I arrived at this fashion show in the South of France straight off the plane without having any time to shower. Luckily I was in a lavender field, so it worked having my hair in an undone French style, but it bummed me out because I wanted to have great hair.

If I had time, I would have done my usual regime. I wake up, wash and condition my hair using the Extentioniste range from Kerastase, which really helps my hair to grow. Then I use dry shampoo right away after washing, it’s great for volume and stops hair getting greasy. Then i put a little of the Kérastase Elixir Ultime on the ends because my hair gets super dry when I work all the time and it’s constantly getting heat applied to it. Then I’m a free woman with one less thing to worry about.

“Cool-girl hair is my go-to look – except when it comes to the red carpet”

I think my early days when I first started doing press and making appearances, the tendency was to give me prom-like curls that needed to be brushed out desperately. They were these perfect ringlets and I look back at those pictures and I hate them. It’s so not cool. I just want my hair to feel easy, like I just woke up with great hair.

Of course, the red carpet is a totally different ball game. My favourite look ever was this year’s Met Gala look, which was an hommage to Cher. We did this giant weave with big curls that went all the way down my back and this amazing winged head piece. I loved it so much, I slept in it.

“Sexism is so subtle, people don’t realise they’re treating you differently”

Whether you’re wearing a suit and doing everything you can to not be thought of as a woman, you’re still thought of in that way. Sexism is so subtle, people don’t realise they’re treating you differently, but as a woman, you realise that people aren’t actually listening to what you’re saying or taking you seriously. I think that it’s important for women to remember that unfortunately, that’s the tendency that our culture has imbued in people, so try not to let it get you down.

Women’s rights and equality are causes very close to my heart. I work with Planned Parenthood and Still She Rises, who help incarcerated women, to try to focus where a lot of people aren’t focussing, which is, on women.

However, I do think it’s getting better, especially in the younger generations. Unfortunately, I don’t think that reflects who is in power at the moment. Corporate and political situations still have a long way to go.

“I grew up in a drought – sustainability is so important to me”

I grew up in California, so I grew up in a permanent drought and we always had limits on water. So from an early age, I’ve been aware of environmental concerns and always been obsessive about recycling and preserving water.

I recycle all my beauty products. And I do this thing, we call them Em Rat-me-downs in my girl crew, where I share all my products with them, like ‘you try this, you take this’. I don’t waste a drop or throw anything away. Plus, my swim line is made entirely in the US and we’re working to make it as eco-friendly as possible.

While I think it’s important to take that personal responsibility, it’s also really important to put pressure on large corporations who are polluting our planet.
