Brexit will deliver the ROARING TWENTIES for Britain, US ambassador predicts

The American ambassador, personally appointed to his role by US President Donald Trump, openly backed Brexit as he said the UK’s departure from the EU was a “really amazing opportunity for this country”. The 72-year-old also appeared to heap praise on Boris Johnson as he said the UK has “really good leadership”. Speaking to The Sunday Express, the US ambassador predicted the UK is set to enter the “Roaring Twenties”, as the start of a new decade approaches in just a few days time.

Mr Johnson, the owner of the New York Jets American football team, said: “I’m very optimistic. I’m an American but, even by my standards, this is really an amazing opportunity for this country.”

“You have a clear direction, you have really good leadership fired up to get something done.

“So yes, a Roaring Twenties, absolutely.”

The Roaring Twenties refers to the 1920s, when a period of economic prosperity was seen in cities across the globe, including London, New York, Paris and Berlin.

It provided a stark contrast to the previous decade, which was largely engulfed by the events of the First World War, and created an era of mass consumerism and artistic flare, characterised by the Jazz-Age flapper girls.

The US ambassador also revealed there was optimism in the White House surrounding a UK-US trade deal.

He said: “It takes two sides but it’s on the President’s desk and when a president takes this much interest in a trade deal, that’s very positive.”

It comes after a leaked document shows the US President has given the UK a shock ultimatum, as the two countries prepare to enter trade talks.

“US stated this ban would not be lifted anytime soon.”

The revelation has sparked outrage from climate campaigners as well as critics of Mr Johnson wary of Donald Trump’s aggressive foreign policy.

Nick Dearden of Global Justice Now said: “The fact that the US has banned even the mention of climate change says it all.

“Trump is a climate denier and any US deal is going to make it much harder for Britain to meet its already tepid commitments.”

Greenpeace director Dr Doug Parr also hit out at the relegation.

He said: “If ‘climate change’ are taboo words for Trump’s negotiators, that’s just a hint of the crushing pressure our environmental standards will come under in any trade deal with the US.

“For US industrial lobbies, this deal is the long-awaited chance to get rid of the rules banning things like chlorinated chicken and hormone-grown beef from our shelves, while leaving our climate and energy policies at the mercy of trade disputes.”
