Major motorway slip roads to close overnight and the WHOLE weekend – check your route

MOTORISTS using a major UK motorway will need to check their journeys before setting off this weekend.

The A3 and M25 around Wisley in Surrey will be affected by a series of closures.

Junction 10, where both motorways meet, has been part of an ongoing project to widen the A3.

From today, the whole interchange will be shut overnight, ahead of further daytime closures planned for the weekend.

The closure will be put in place to allow for resurfacing work.

Jonathan Wade, project director for National Highways, told BBC Radio Surrey: “You can expect to see some disruption from about 21:00.

“So long as you’re travelling later at night, you should be OK.

“The following weekend, 17 and 18, for that whole weekend you will not be able to transition between the M25 and the A3 at all.”

“I think there’s an air of tolerance” said Mr Wade, “it is a nuisance and we recognise its a nuisance.

“It’s an imposition on those travelling long distances and those who are impacted by these kind of activities.”

Workers are hopeful the project will be finished by Spring 2026.

This comes as chaos broke out on the M5 yesterday after a ‘loose dog’ caused a three-car crash between junctions 8 (M50) and 7 (Worcester South).

Motorists suffered delays of up to an hour in the aftermath.

A spokesperson for West Mercia Police said:  “We received a call around 12.15pm yesterday afternoon (May 11) with a report of a dog loose on the M5 between junctions 8 and 7 resulting in a collision between three vehicles.”

“Officers attended and one person was taken to hospital with injuries.”

Further delays occurred earlier today after Lane 3 of the M5 was closed following the collision.

There was also a crash at 8am today also caused around four miles of congestion which added an hour to normal journey times.

tweet from National Highways reads: “Lane 3 is closed on the #M5 southbound between J7 #Worcester and J8 #M50 due to a collision.

“Lanes 1 and 2 remain open.

“There is around 4 miles of congestion on approach which is adding about an hour to normal journey times.”

Lanes were reopened around 10am, with expected delays of around half an hour remaining.

They updated motorists on Twitter saying: “All lanes are now open on the #M5 southbound between J7 #Worcester and J8 #M50.”

Tips for driving in the heat

Temperatures to climb to 23C this week, said the Met Office

  • Stay Hydrated: Keep a bottle of water in the car to ensure you stay refreshed.
  • Check Tyres: Heat can increase tyre pressure—check for proper inflation and any signs of wear.
  • Use Air Conditioning: Ensure your car’s air conditioning is functioning effectively to stay cool.
  • Protect Yourself: Wear sunglasses to reduce glare and use sunshades to keep the interior cool.
  • Plan Ahead: Avoid driving during peak heat hours if possible and allow extra time for your journey.
  • Emergency Kit: Carry essentials like water, sunscreen, and a phone charger in case of delays.
