Zelda Breath of the Wild 2 news today begins with some big claims about BoTW 2 getting a 2020 release date.
Zelda Breath of the Wild 2 is undoubtedly one of the most highly anticipated Nintendo Switch games on the horizon.
Announced in a surprise reveal at the end of the E3 Nintendo Direct, all Zelda fans have to go on is a short Breath of the Wild 2 teaser trailer.
It pictures Zelda and Link in a Hyrule looking distinctly worse for wear and hints at a dark tone for the new Nintendo Switch game.
It could be that Breath of the Wild 2 will be the Majora’s Mask to BoTW’s Ocarina of Time.
And as fans wait for more official news on Zelda Breath of the Wild 2 an interesting theory has emerged about the game’s release date.
Popular YouTuber HMK has in a post online put a compelling case forward for why Zelda Breath of the Wild 2 could have a 2020 release date.
HMK pointed to a number of pieces of evidence that indicate Zelda Breath of the Wild 2 is further along in development than fans may think.
First up the YouTuber pointed towards how Zelda Breath of the Wild 2 has been in development since at least October 2017.
And that’s straight from the horse’s mouth, with BoTW producer Eiji Aonuma revealing as much in the Zelda Breath of the Wild Creating a Champion book.
At the end of the book Aonuma-san confirmed that development on the next Zelda game had already begun.
The book states that this interview was conducted at Nintendo HQ in October 2017, meaning BoTW 2 development began before this point.
As HMK said: “So the game has been in a good chunk of development up until this point.
“And just because we didn’t hear about anything, and we still don’t have a lot of information about it, doesn’t mean the game’s development isn’t a good portion in.”
HMK also pointed out that development for BoTW 2 could be sped up as it’s reusing assets from the original Breath of the Wild.
So, using the same engine, assets and world seen in BoTW could make it quicker to make BoTW 2.
HMK also predicted that if Breath of the Wild 2 launches next year then it could have a holiday 2020 release date.
The YouTuber said it would be unlikely that BoTW 2 would launch on the three year anniversary of BoTW’s release as it’ll compete with the FF7 Remake.
HMK was also convinced BoTW could launch next year as they said it looked like the game was “60 per cent” completed in the teaser trailer.
HMK also pointed to a previous sequel that Nintendo released – Super Mario Galaxy 2.
The first Mario Galaxy came out in 2007 with Mario Galaxy 2 out in 2010.
HMK pointed out how BoTW came in 2017, and if they followed a similar release schedule as Galaxy then BoTW 2 could be out in 2020.
If BoTW 2 drops in 2020 it will be first time since Ocarina that a new mainline Zelda has not been released within two years of its predecessor.
Discussing when BoTW 2 may surface next, HMK predicted Breath of the Wild 2 could debut its next trailer at the Game Awards in December 2019.
The reason being is that BoTW featured at three Game Awards previously, so it would make sense for the sequel to get a showing at this year’s event.
