Jurgen Klopp took issue with a reporter’s suggestion that he was “very angry” after Diego Simeone refused to shake his hand following Liverpool’s win over Atletico Madrid.

The Reds emerged victorious from an eventful game in the Spanish capital on Tuesday, where their 3-2 win has put them on the cusp of the knockout stages.

A deflected Mohamed Salah effort and a stunning volley from Naby Keita put the Reds 2-0 up after just 13 minutes at the Wanda Metropolitano stadium, but Atletico roared back thanks to a brace from Antoine Griezmann.

However, the game then turned when Griezmann was sent off for a high boot to the face of Roberto Firmino, with Liverpool then nudging ahead when Salah scored his 12th goal of the season – from just 11 appearances – from the penalty spot after Diogo Jota had been fouled.

Klopp left his hand out after Simeone had bolted down the touchline and appeared frustrated

There was still time for Atletico to have a penalty awarded and then taken away when Jota was initially judged to have fouled Jose Gimenez in the box, only for VAR to overrule the decision.

At full-time Simeone turned and ran down the tunnel instead of shaking Klopp’s hand, leaving a bemused Reds boss to instead shake the hands of some of Atletico’s substitutes.

The Reds boss then took issue with the suggestion that he was “very angry” with the snub when he spoke to Australian broadcaster Stan Sport after match.

Responding to a reporter’s question, he said: “Why was I angry?

“Come on, I’m not such an idiot… I was not angry at all. Have a look. But you want to make a story of that I can imagine.

“I wanted to shake his hand, he didn’t want to. In that moment I can understand that, he was running inside.

“He’s emotional, I’m emotional, and you are not a nice person because you want to make a story of that.

“You say I’m angry? When was I angry? I’m now angry because of your question.”

The Reds boss then left the interview, with the reporter having clearly upset him.

Klopp also discussed the incident with Simeone at his post-match press conference, where he admitted that the Atletico manager’s actions had “wound him up” a little.

“Yeah I know, just wanted to wind me up, I don’t like that but the situation is clear: I wanted to shake his hand, he didn’t want it,” he said.

“His reaction was run, mine [reaction] was not too cool as well but we are both emotional so when I see him next time we will shake hands definitely and nothing happened.

“He was obviously angry with me, the game, the world, stuff like this, it’s nothing else.”

Simeone was asked about his decision to run down the tunnel at full-time, telling reporters: “When I’m angry, I respect the situation.

“I have no problem, I just tend to do that when we lose and I’m not happy.”
