Will Joe Biden or Kamala Harris ban fracking?

Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden has repeatedly claimed he does not support a ban on hydraulic fracturing, known as fracking.

Fracking is technique in which water and sand are pumped under high pressure into a well to create fractures in rock formations that release oil and natural gas.

But rather than placing an outright ban on the fossil fuel method, Biden is seeking to tighten up permissions and ban the issue of new permits for any form of oil and gas drilling on federal land.

In an August campaign event in Pennsylvania Biden said: “I am not banning fracking.”

“I am not banning fracking, no matter how many times Donald Trump lies about me,” Biden said.

“Because you see, Joe understands that the West Coast of our country is burning, including my home state of California,” Harris.

”Joe sees what is happening on the Gulf states, which are being battered by storms.

“Joe has seen and talked with the farmers in Iowa, whose entire crops have been destroyed because of floods, and so Joe believes, again, in science.”

According to the US Energy Information Administration (EIA), the areas where fracking is most profitable include the Great Plains from Canada south into Texas, the Great Lakes region.

A large part of the US’ fracking activities take place in an area known as the Marcellus Shale, which reaches from central New York into Ohio and south to Virginia.
