Sunrisers Hyderabad head coach Trevor Bayliss and captain David Warner have explained why Jonny Bairstow was dropped for their must-win Indian Premier League clash against Delhi Capitals.

England World Cup hero Bairstow has scored 345 runs in 11 innings during this year’s IPL, including a match-winning 97 from 55 balls against Kings XI Punjab.

But the 31-year-old was a surprise absentee for Sunrisers against Delhi on Tuesday, with Bayliss confirming he was left out for tactical reasons.

Wriddhiman Saha was moved up the order in replace of Bairstow and smashed 87 from 45 balls and shared a 107-run opening stand with Warner as Sunrisers posted 219-2.

Hyderabad then bowled Delhi out for 131 to secure an 88-run victory and keep their play-off hopes alive.

Explaining why Bairstow was left out against Delhi, England’s World Cup-winning coach Bayliss said: ‘Look, we wanted to play the all-rounder in the middle just to give us some more bowling.

‘It gives it another option with five bowlers plus Vijay Shankar. From Jonny’s point of view, that meant one of the top-three batters had to miss out.

‘Kane [Williamson] has been batting very well for us when available and obviously the other overseas is the captain [David Warner] so Jonny was the odd one out on this occasion.

‘But look, with the way Jonny plays, I’m sure he will play a lot more.’

Sunrisers skipper Warner added: ‘It was a very tough call, especially with Jonny playing as well as he has. We felt picking Kane would work out.’
