Schools across the UK are set to welcome students back to the classroom on Monday for the first time since they closed in March amid the coronavirus pandemic.
Boris Johnson confirmed on Thursday that schools would be re-opening for some years from 1 June as some of the country’s lockdown measures are gradually eased – although not all students will be returning?
So which schools are re-opening on Monday, which years are going back first – and when can other students expect to return?

Monday will see primary schools re-opening, with pupils in reception, Year One and Year Six the first to return.
Some secondary school pupils will follow on 15 June, with Years 10 and 12 given the opportunity to have some contact with their teachers, as they are preparing for exams in the next academic year.
‘We then intend, from June 15, for secondary schools to provide some contact for Year 10 and Year 12 students to help them prepare for exams next year with up to a quarter of these students in at any point.
‘By opening schools to more pupils in this limited way we are taking a deliberately cautious approach.’
Speaking at the briefing on Thursday, the PM said: ‘Closing schools has deprived children of their education and as so often, it is the most disadvantaged pupils who risk being hardest hit.
‘On Monday we will start to put this right in a safe way by reopening nurseries and other early years settings, and reception, year one and year six in primary schools.
‘We then intend, from June 15, for secondary schools to provide some contact for Year 10 and Year 12 students to help them prepare for exams next year with up to a quarter of these students in at any point.
‘By opening schools to more pupils in this limited way we are taking a deliberately cautious approach.’
When will other school years return?
The remaining school years look unlikely to return to the classroom until the start of the new academic year in September.
The plan to re-open school for some years on Monday has proven controversial, with some councils having said they re-open their schools, and many parents saying they won’t be sending their children on that date – as well as teachers expressing concern over whether it’s safe.
However the Government has said it will not fine families who refuse to send their children back – although did say it ‘strongly encouraged’ people to do so unless there was a specific reason for them not to return.
The Department of Education has said: ‘Whilst there will be no penalty for families who do not send their children to school, families will be strongly encouraged to take up these places – unless the family member is shielding or the child is particularly vulnerable due to an underlying condition.’
