You might have seen ‘#accountant’ on TikTok in recent weeks, and wondered if financial literacy had become a new trend on the social media platform.

That’s not quite why the word is everywhere – it has a secret meaning.

So before you shoot them a DM asking for help on your budgeting, you may want to double-check their profession is what they say it is.

Here is all you need to know about why ‘accountants’ are suddenly popping up all over social media…

What is an accountant on TikTok?

The word ‘accountant’ on TikTok has taken on a whole new meaning, thanks to a viral video by user @rockysroad.

The account, run by actor Rocky Paterra, shared a song for ‘all struggling actors’ embarrassed about working part time – telling them to say they’re accountants instead.

It’s not just become a euphemism for theatre fans though. It’s now been taken up by sex workers as a way to describe their job, and also avoid those ever-present social media censors.

Videos lip-syncing to the song have become a trend among people who work in pornography, or run OnlyFans accounts.

One compilation shows a user singing along, with the caption ‘when you make thousands off OF but your father asks where your money is coming from.’

Another video shows a woman lamenting users who don’t understand the term, saying it’s not about being ‘good at maths.’

While most people are enjoying reusing the sound of the broadway-style video, TikTok users who are really accountants are feeling pretty peeved.

The account @jodiemooree shared a video of her mother using a calculator with the original song, and others have taken to Twitter to clarify what their job actually is.

So if someone on TikTok says they’re an accountant but something’s not adding up… it might be worth checking their other videos!
