The countdown to England’s first Euro 2020 match is nearing its end as Gareth Southgate continues to make the final few tweaks to his starting XI.

Southgate named his final 26-man squad on June 1 after cutting seven players from his initial 33-man squad including Manchester United striker Mason Greenwood who withdrew through injury.

The month-long tournament begins on June 11 in Rome and concludes a month later with the final taking place at Wembley.

England are among the favourites to win the competition but Southgate is weary of the strong competition his team must overcome if they are to win a first European Championships.

‘We’re one of a number of teams who, I think, are in the frame. Have we peaked as a team? I don’t think we have,’ Southgate said.

‘But can we say we’re ahead of Portugal, who’ve won a Nations League and a Euros? Or France, who are world champions? Or Belgium, who have been ranked No.1 for four years and only lost two or three games?

‘We can’t be arrogant and say we’re ahead of those teams. We’re in that group – like Italy, Spain and Germany – who are improving quickly.

‘It’s an incredibly strong field. We are capable, I think, of beating any team on a given day.’

England will play three group matches before (hopefully) progressing to the knockout stage of the competition.

England begin their Euro 2020 campaign against 2018 World Cup finalists Croatia – the team that dumped Southgate’s side out of the tournament in the semis that time.

Their first match will take place on Sunday, June 13 at 2pm BST.

The Three Lions then turn their attention to a clash with Scotland on Friday June, 18 (8pm) before their final group game against Czech Republic four days later in another evening kick-off (8pm).
