Weed can cause heart attacks due to the strength of modern cannabis, doctors warn

People who enjoy weed ‘edibles’ could have their buzz ruined by a potentially deadly heart attack.

That’s the warning from doctors who said eating cannabis is ‘a major unrecognised risk’.

A new study published in the Canadian Journal of Cardiology has questioned the belief that ganja is ‘the safest recreational drug’ which carries more health benefits than risks.

The research reveals the tragic tale of a 70-year-old man with stable coronary artery disease who decided to munch on a pot-infused lollipop.

This psychedelic sweetie proved too much for the pensioner, who suffered a serious heart attack.

Although the OAP had enjoyed a puff or two in his youth, nothing had prepared him for the strength of modern, legalised cannabis which has vastly more THC than weed smoked in the 1960s hippy era.

He was also unfamiliar with the delayed effects of eating weed, which can take several hours to kick in.

It’s believed the trip was so intense it put ‘unexpected strain on his body from anxiety and fearful hallucinations caused by the unusually large amount of THC he ingested’.

‘Marijuana can be a useful tool for many patients, especially for pain and nausea relief,’ said Alexandra Saunders, MD,  from Dalhousie University.

‘At the same time, like all other medications, it does carry risk and side effects.

‘In a recent case, inappropriate dosing and oral consumption of marijuana by an older patient with stable cardiovascular disease resulted in distress that caused a cardiac event and subsequent reduced cardiac function.’

We found out what it felt like to eat a modern cannabis product.

One British man in his thirties who tried a weed edible in San Francisco likened the experience to being ‘sucked into a green skunky wormhole’.

‘I ate a little cannabis jelly and after a few hours was so stoned I could barely speak,’ he told Metro.

‘It’s serious s***.

‘I had a total freak out, my brain basically broke for a few hours and I was only to able to fixate on one weird thought which kept going around and around in my head.

‘Meanwhile, if I opened my eyes all I could see was whirling green shapes and it felt like I was being pulled down a psychedelic plughole.

‘It wasn’t pleasant.’
