Edouard Mendy insists Chelsea are ‘in a good way’ again and believes side’s performance against Aston Villa was a significant improvement on their recent displays versus Arsenal and West Ham.

Olivier Giroud opened the scoring with a smart 34th-minute header past Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez on Monday night but Anwar El Ghazi equalised shortly after half-time and the visitors held on to secure a point at Stamford Bridge.

Though the result moved Chelsea up to sixth in the Premier League table, with Tottenham facing Fulham on Wednesday evening, it meant they have now won just six of their last matches in all competitions.

‘It was a difficult game because Aston Villa are a good team but I think it was better than Arsenal and West Ham,’ Chelsea goalkeeper Mendy told the club’s official website shortly after the final whistle.

‘I think we played good and we deserved to win.’

Mendy spoke with Chelsea TV shortly after the final whistle

Mendy said it was ‘easy’ switching language from French to English as Andreas Christensen and Antonio Rudiger replaced Thiago Silva and Kurt Zouma at the heart of Chelsea’s defence.

‘No, it’s not different because I already speak in England at the training ground and in the game because I’ve already played with Toni and Christensen,’ the Senegal international continued.

‘So it’s easy for me to switch to English.’

Asked whether Chelsea’s confidence had returned, Mendy replied: ‘Yes, I think it was really important to show another thing and I think we are in a good way.

‘But we have to keep working and believe in ourselves.’
