Wayne Rooney says sorry to wife Coleen, kids and Derby over viral hotel images

Wayne Rooney has apologised for his involvement in the hotel images scandal over the weekend.

Pictures of the Derby County boss asleep surrounded by three young women went viral on social media.

Rooney was snapped sleeping on a chair in a hotel with Snapchat model Tayler Ryan and her friends Elise Melvin and Brooke Morgan over the weekend, the Mirror reports.

They had been at the exclusive club Chinawhite in Deansgate before moving on to a £60-a-night room at Staycity hotel.

There is no suggestion that Rooney acted inappropriately. On Tuesday Cheshire Police confirmed they would not be taking action against a complaint of blackmail made regarding the images, after Rooney’s representatives thought there had been an illicit attempt to entrap him.

Tonight, he addressed the issue publicly.

Speaking immediately after Derby’s pre-season friendly with Real Betis, Rooney said: “I made a mistake. I went to a private party with two of my friends.

“From me, I would like to apologise to my family and the club for the images which were going round.

“I want to move forward on this. I’m grateful to Derby County for giving me this opportunity to get this club back to where it belongs.

“I will do everything in my power to do that.”

Rooney was then quizzed on whether he felt the victim in the episode.

He added: “Yes, but I don’t really want to go into that. Listen, it’s dealt with and I’m looking forward to moving forward and preparing for another game on Sunday.”

Max Bird scored a late goal to seal a welcome win for the Rams, against a side who finished sixth in La Liga last season. That came as a welcome tonic during another event-laden week at Pride Park.

As well as the much-publicised hotel episode, it was also revealed that Rooney’s tackle on one of his star players, Jason Knight, had caused him an injury.

Knight injured his ankle during the training ground incident.

Regarding that, Rooney said: “With Jason, it was a training ground incident, which happens. I demand that the players train with a lot of intensity.

Rooney apologised to his wife Coleen and their four children

“Players get injured on the training pitch, unfortunately Jason did and I’m looking forward to having him back fit and ready for selection.

“That’s football. I demand that we train like we play, and if I put those demands on players, players will get injured.”

The Rams have been beset by ongoing dramas over the past few months.

The long list includes a draining battle with the EFL, failed takeovers, a relegation fight that went to the final day and a transfer embargo.

The latter means Rooney has been unable to so far add any new players to his squad, with trialists permitted to play in warm-up games. As of yet, none of those on trial have signed permanent deals.

Derby finish their pre-season schedule on Sunday with a trip to Notts County before their Championship opener at home to Huddersfield on August 7.
