Watford’s Premier League clash with Chelsea was temporarily suspended after a medical emergency in the stands.

Players spotted a fan in distress in the Graham Taylor stand, prompting medical staff to sprint across the field at Vicarage Road and offer assistance.

The Watford supporter suffered a heart attack, the club later confirmed.

Moments later the players were ordered to leave the field and returned to their respective dressing rooms to keep warm while medics administered CPR to the fan.

Watford’s official Twitter account wrote: “There is a break in play due to a medical emergency in the crowd. Both teams have left the field.”

Both Watford and Chelsea stars wanted an update on the fan’s condition before they were prepared to return to the pitch to resume play.

It then emerged that the fan’s condition had stabilised and an ambulance was called to escort the supporter to the nearby Watford General Hospital.

A stadium announcement declared: “The condition of the supporter has thankfully been stabilised.”

And Watford’s official Twitter account tweeted: “The players have returned to the field in preparation of play resuming.

“Our thoughts are with the fan – who had a cardiac arrest but has now been stabilised – and all those affected. Thank you to the medical staff, players and fans for their quick response.”

Reece James, the Chelsea and England star who was not in the Blues squad, also took to Twitter to say a few words on the incident.

Watford and Chelsea players returned from the pitch 25 minutes after leaving it and were allowed to warm up for five minutes before the match officially resumed.

Just under 10 minutes of the match had been played when the incident occurred, with the scores level.

Watford defender Adam Masina was in fact down receiving treatment for an injury when the fan was suddenly taken ill.

Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel has made six changes from his side’s 1-1 draw with Manchester United on Sunday for the game against Watford.

Jorginho, Callum Hudson-Odoi and Hakim Ziyech were all dropped to the bench in place of Saul, Mason Mount and Christian Pulisic.

James was not included in the matchday squad, with Kai Havertz, Andreas Christensen and Cesar Azpilicueta also named in the starting XI.

Claudio Ranieri only made one change to the starting line-up from the side that lost at Leicester, despite Watford’s mounting casualty list.

Joao Pedro was included while Cucho Hernandez took his place among the substitutes.

Ahead of the match, former Chelsea boss Ranieri told the press: “I am confident [the squad will cope despite the mounting casualty list], but of course if I had all my players it would be better.

“The club has a very good group of players and now, [for] those who have played less, is the right moment to show what they want to do in the Premier League.

“It’s not enough to ‘want’ in the Championship, now they have to show what they can ‘do’ in the Premier League, but I am very confident.

“It’s okay, I don’t like to cry. I want to react, I want my players to be positive, confident and fight together.”
