Euro 2020 briefing: Wales face Denmark in top-16 clash

Wales vs Denmark LIVE

– Euro 2020 last 16 clash kicks off at 5pm in Amsterdam, Holland
– Wales looking to repeat their run to semi-finals at Euro 2016
– Denmark won Euros in 1992 but not got to quarter-finals since 2004
– Confirmed team news expected around 1hr 30mins before kick-off

Not how Wales wanted their Euro 2020 campaign to end but they have still made memories to cherish. Denmark look like a force to be reckoned with, a performance to make Christian Eriksen smile.

94′ – Martin Braithwaite has the ball in the net but he’s just offside, according to the linesman. VAR takes a look and overrules the decision. 4-0.

90′ – It’s never a red card but the Liverpool attacker is sent off for a lazy tackle. Born out of frustration.

89‘ – Joakim Maehle gets in on the act by cutting inside and rifling the ball into the top card with his left foot.

60′ – Double sub for Denmark: Mathias Jensen and Christian Noergaard are on for Mikkel Damsgaard and Thomas Delaney.

Harry Wilson is also on for Wales, replacing Joe Morrell.

48′ – Kieffer Moore looked to have been fouled in the build-up there but Wales will be kicking themselves for failing to defend the Danish attack. Neco Williams swipes the ball straight into the path of Dolberg, who fired home past Ward. Mountain to climb.

Kasper Dolberg

Not the worst half from Wales but they need to find something from within if they’re to turn this game around. Denmark were pressing for a second but luckily didn’t get it.

40′ – Connor Roberts is subbed off for Neco Williams after pulling up with a groin injury. Gutting for the Swansea man.

27′ – Denmark have the lead! It’s that man Dolberg who picks up the ball on the edge of the area and drives home brilliantly. Quick VAR check for offside by all clear. Great goal to open the scoring.

25′ – After a quiet 10 minutes, Joe Rodon is booked for holding back Kasper Dolberg.

11′ – Another half-chance for Wales as Aaron Ramsey hacks away at the ball but his own team-mate Bale blocked the shot inside the box.

10′ – Gareth Bale cuts inside and unleashes a vicious drive that flies just wide of the post.

4′ – Dan James can’t control after being played in down the flank. Chris Mepham also finds some space in the box from a set-piece. Can’t control.

Underway in Amsterdam.

Danger Men

So who are the danger men for both sides today?

Well, it goes without saying, Gareth Bale is the man Denmark will want to keep quiet.

His experience could prove key today if Wales are to reach the quarter-finals once again.

Furthermore, the pace of Daniel James could prove to be a weapon in behind the Danes.

The Group B runners-up have plenty of stars who can cause Wales problems too though.

Mikkel Damsgaard has shown his quality during the group stages while RB Leipzig’s Yussuf Poulsen remains a big goalscoring threat.

The game could be won and lost in the middle of the park though as Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg looks to nullify Aaron Ramsey.

The team news is in and as you would expect, Wales stick with the XI that has brought them a fair share of joy so far at Euro 2020.

Wales: Ward; Robertson, Mepham, Rodon, Davies; Allen, Morrell, Ramsey; James, Bale, Moore.

Denmark: Schmeichel; Christensen, Kjaer, Vestergaard; Stryger, Hojbjerg, Delaney, Maehle; Damsgaard, Dolberg, Braithwaite.

3.25pm: The winners of this tie stand to face either the Netherlands or the Czech Republic in the quarter-finals in Baku, Azerbaijan a week today.

Denmark have got out of the group stage for the first time in 17 years and will fancy their chances against Wales.

They won the last two meetings between the countries in the UEFA Nations League in late 2018.

The absent Eriksen scored both goals in a 2-0 win in Aarhus while Nicolai Jorgensen and Martin Braithwaite netted in a 2-1 win in Cardiff, Gareth Bale scoring for the hosts.

3.15pm: How they got here…

Wales came second in Group A behind Italy after a win, a draw and a loss. Rob Page’s side defeated Turkey 2-0 after drawing 1-1 with the Swiss.

They fell 1-0 to the Italians in their final group match but that was not enough to prevent them progressing to this stage.

Denmark meanwhile went through as second in Group B behind Belgium.

Despite losing 1-0 to Finland, a match interrupted halfway through as talismanic playmaker Christian Eriksen suffered a cardiac arrest, and 2-1 to Belgium, the Danes still went through.

That was because they hammered Russia 4-1 and had a superior goal difference to both Finland and Russia, although all three nations ended up on three points.
