Vitamin D deficiency: Four of the most common symptoms – and you may be ignoring them

Vitamin D is crucial for the body, as it helps to keep your bones, teeth and muscles healthy, said the NHS. Without enough vitamin D – which is also known as the ‘sunshine’ supplement – it’s difficult to regulate the amount of calcium and phosphate in the body. A severe lack of the vitamin may even lead to bone deformities, rickets, or osteomalacia. One of the most common warning signs of a vitamin D deficiency is having back pain, it’s been revealed.

Back or bone pain could be caused by a vitamin D deficiency, revealed nutritionist Franziska Spritzler.

Without enough vitamin D, the body struggles to absorb enough calcium, which is needed for the bones.

A lack of calcium can lead to bone or back pain, which is why it’s linked to a vitamin D deficiency.

“Vitamin D is an extremely important vitamin that has powerful effects on several systems throughout your body,” said Spritzler, writing on medical website Healthline.

“Unlike other vitamins, vitamin D functions like a hormone, and every single cell in your body has a receptor for it.

“Most people don’t realise that they’re deficient, as symptoms are generally subtle.

“Bone pain and lower back pain may be signs of inadequate vitamin D levels in the blood.

“People with vitamin D deficiency are nearly twice as likely to experience bone pain in their legs, ribs or joints compared to those with blood levels in the normal range.”

Another common sign of a vitamin D deficiency is persistently feeling tired, revealed the nutritionist.

But, you also shouldn’t ignore having cuts or wounds that take longer to heal than normal.

Vitamin D is needed for forming new skin as part of the healing process, said Spritzler.

Losing your hair could also be a warning sign of a vitamin D deficiency, she said.

Low levels of vitamin D has been linked to alopecia areata – an autoimmune condition that causes hair loss on the head, and other parts of the body.

But, you could lower your risk of a vitamin D deficiency by eating certain foods, including oily fish and egg yolks.

Alternatively, vitamin D supplements will help you to avoid signs and symptoms of the condition.

It’s recommended that everyone takes a 10mcg vitamin D supplement during the winter months, as the body struggles to produce enough vitamin D from September through to March.
