Virgil van Dijk is set to sign a new contract at Liverpool that will see him double his salary.

The Dutchman has become a pivotal part of the Red’s success and won the PFA player of the year last season for his impressive form.

Liverpool want to tie the defender down to a new long-term deal at Anfield, even though his current contract still has a few years left to run.

According to 90min , van Dijk will double his £125k-per-week wages to £250k-per-week as part of the agreement.

In doing so, he will become the latest in a significant crop of players to extend their contracts on Merseyside as Liverpool focus on keeping hold of their key stars.

Van Dijk’s stock has risen considerably since his £75 million switch from Southampton in January last year.

By winning the PFA award last season he became the first defender to do so in 14 years, and has been instilled as Liverpool’s third-choice captain.

After their Champions League triumph in June, as well as their 97-point haul in the Premier League, van Dijk is now also considered one of the favourites for the much-coveted FIFA Ballon D’or, and has been nominated for the Best FIFA Men’s Player prize.

Negotiations between van Dijk and Liverpool are believed to have started after their European Cup victory in June.
