Uruguay assistant sends message to Edinson Cavani over Manchester United exit

Uruguay assistant manager Mario Rebollo says he ‘doesn’t care’ whether Edinson Cavani is playing for Manchester United or Boca Juniors next season, as long as the striker is ‘comfortable’ and performing consistently at a competitive level.

Eyebrows were raised when United signed Cavani, 34, on a free transfer last summer given the forward’s age and the fact he hadn’t made a single appearance for Paris Saint-Germain in over seven months.

But the veteran Uruguay international has proven himself to be a valuable addition to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s attack when fit and has racked up six goals and two assists in the Premier League this season.

The Red Devils were thought to be open to offering Cavani a new deal in the summer but the player’s father, Luis, cast doubt over a possible extension earlier this month as he suggested his son was unsettled in England and keen to return to South America.

He claimed PSG’s all-time record goalscorer had spoken with Boca vice-president Juan Roman Riquelme with a view to joining the Buenos Aires outfit ahead of the 2021/22 campaign.

‘My son does not feel comfortable in England and wants to be close to the family again,’ Luis Cavani said.

‘Edinson is going to end up playing in South America.

‘I want Edinson to play in a team that fights for something important.

‘Edinson had many conversations with Riquelme and he would like to play for Boca.’

Cavani’s lack of match fitness meant he missed out on selection for Oscar Tabarez’s latest Uruguay squad.

But the attacker’s future continues to be the subject of intense speculation back home in his native Uruguay and Rebollo – assistant boss of the national side – discussed his options with 2 De Punta.

Asked whether Cavani should swap United for Boca this summer, Rebollo said: ‘The priority is that he plays where he is comfortable and where he’s playing at a good competitive level.

‘If it’s close to here it would be great but only if he’s comfortable.

‘It would be good for us if Cavani plays where he feels most comfortable.

‘I don’t care if it’s Boca or another place, we have to have him with rhythm and strong competition.’
