Two unsigned Scots singers battle it out in UK top 40 chart beating Miley Cyrus

Unsigned Scots singers Joshua Grant and Luke La Volpe are battling it out in the UK charts this week.

The talented young musicians are currently neck and neck in the iTunes top 40, prompting a “wee Oasis vs Blur situation” as they both vie for the top spots of the official rundown on Friday.

Joshua released new single Lay Me Down on Friday, and at the same time Bathgate singer/songwriter Luke dropped his newest tune, Stand Up.

Joshua is hoping to beat his rival, but told the Daily Record the competition is all light-hearted, as the pair are actually the best of pals.

The 18-year-old said: “We’ve both managed a number 1 in Scotland before so we’ve got a wee oasis vs blur situation.

“Luke and I are good mates though and have both supported Tom Walker in Edinburgh together, so I’m loving the competition.

“So me and Luke have one week to sell as many as possible! “

Joshua is originally from Edinburgh but relocated to the west of Scotland earlier this year to study at the University of Glasgow.

The student admitted he was finding first year a “bit odd” due to life under restrictions brought on by the coronavirus pandemic, but he’s still having “lots of fun”.

And he’s enjoying getting the chance to pursue his lifelong passion in music.

After Lay Me Down went live on iTunes on Friday, the song quickly rose to number 11.

Joshua added: “Yesterday was crazy. It was a really, really nice feeling.

“I’ve got to keep battling this week and see if we can make official charts at the end of the week, along with Luke.”

Luke, a pal of Lewis Capaldi, was also in good spirits on Friday after Stand Up rose to number five in the iTunes charts in the first few hours of its release, beating Miley Cyrus, Little Mix and Billie Eilish.

Liam Gallagher is currently number 1 in the midweek charts

The 24-year-old took to Instagram to thank fans.

He said: “We were at number five, strange sentence to be saying, just want to thank you all for getting involved and helping me out, class.

“It gave me such a good day again and I’m buzzing.

“But the fight’s not over until it’s over, keep in mind I’m just a wee guy from Bathgate, unsigned, fighting the good fight against Liam Gallagher, Miley Cyrus, Little Mix, f*****g Billie Eilish, this is wild.

“So thanks very much for putting me in this position but one last wee push would just be amazing.”

Joshua and Luke are currently at number 26 and 25 in the iTunes chart respectively.
