Twitch bans PogChamp emote after Congress attack – promises to make new one

PogChamp is no more

An emote has been removed from Twitch, after concern that the person it depicts has been tweeting in support of violence at the US Capitol.

The unprecedented events in Washington, D.C. have been felt even in gaming communities, as Twitch has made the move to remove the PogChamp emote from the service.

Although the emote is one of the oldest and most popular on Twitch it features Street Fighter pro player Ryan ‘Gootecks’ Gutierrez, who has been tweeting in support of rioters at the US Capitol building.

Gootecks’ political views have been obvious for a while now but his tweets on Wednesday night have pushed Twitch to ban the emote, although they have promised to make a replacement.

The PogChamp emote is used to indicate excitement during streams, with its users being referred to as ‘poggers’.

Versions of the emote have become popular beyond just Twitch, with the photo of Gutierrez becoming a meme for surprise and excitement beyond just gaming.

Twitch has said that it will ‘work with the community’ to design a new emote, although it’s unclear whether it will still be called PogChamp.

‘We’ve made the decision to remove the PogChamp emote following statements from the face of the emote encouraging further violence after what took place in the Capitol today,’ said a Twitch statement.

‘We want the sentiment and use of Pog to live on – its meaning is much bigger than the person depicted or image itself – and it has a big place in Twitch culture. However, we can’t in good conscience continue to enable use of the image.’
