Troy Deeney admits he isn’t surprised Manchester United’s players are copying Cristiano Ronaldo’s dietary habits and claims he would eat ‘horse s***’ if he saw the Portuguese superstar doing so.

The 36-year-old returned to Old Trafford earlier this summer and has picked up where he left off, scoring three times in two matches, including a brace in last weekend’s 4-1 win over Newcastle.

Ronaldo has, in part, prolonged his career as a consequence of his strict and rigorous health regime. The former Real Madrid star employs a personal nutritionist and follows a plan which sees him eat food that his high in protein to ensure he is in peak physical condition at all times.

And Deeney, who swapped Watford for Birmingham this summer, insists it is no surprise Ronaldo’s dedication to maintaining his fitness is already beginning to rub off on his teammates.

Deeney said: ‘If I saw Ronaldo eating horses**t for a pre-match meal, I’d eat horses**t too!’

‘If Ronaldo becomes your team-mate, it’s not as if you’re going to imagine that you could be as good as him – but you would witness his professionalism up close and want to emulate everything he does, to make yourself as good as you can be.’

Deeney’s comments come after reserve goalkeeper Lee Grant outlined the United player’s reaction to Ronaldo’s diet, telling TalkSPORT: ‘To give you one instance of the impact he is having on the group right. This was Friday night in the hotel.

‘I tell you now, not one player touched the apple crumble and custard, not one player went up for that brownie because everybody was sat down.

‘One of the lads said to me, “What has Cristiano got on his plate?”

‘So we were having a little goosey gander at what he has got and obviously it is the cleanest, most healthy plate you can imagine.

‘And it just cracked me up how not one single player dared get up and have that junk food that was laid out.’

When asked to explain exactly what was on Ronaldo’s plate, he said: ‘I’ll tell you one of his plates – he had several. One of them was quinoa, avocado and a couple of boiled eggs.

‘Listen, this guy is in incredible shape. He’s actually got the second best body behind me now at the club – and that’s saying something, so fair play to him!’
