Torreira could derail Arsenal's transfer plans as club confirm deal is off

Lucas Torreira has seemingly seen a route to one of his favoured transfer destinations blocked off after Torino confirmed that they won’t be signing the Arsenal midfielder.

The Uruguayan is looking to leave the Emirates this summer having fallen out of favour under manager Mikel Arteta, with the club hoping to bank money from his sale in order to fund the purchase of a new midfielder.

Atletico Madrid’s Thomas Partey has been strongly linked with the club, and Torreira has been touted as a potential new arrival for the La Liga side, who have just signed his international teammate Luis Suarez.

Partey’s potential Arsenal transfer doesn’t hinge on Torreira going the other way though, and the former Sampdoria midfielder has also been linked with a return to Italy having also played for Serie B outfit Pescara.

The 24-year-old is believed to have cited Torino as one of the clubs he could join in Italy, but the Serie A side’s sporting director has now said that they will struggle to afford him.

“Torreira is a top player but his price is too high,” said Davide Vagnati, as per “It’s difficult to sign him from Arsenal, not just for us.”

Gunners boss Arteta has remained tight-lipped on the future of Torreira, but he is believed to be one of the players the club are willing to allow to leave the club before the closure of the transfer window.

Arteta has remained tight-lipped on transfers

“We don’t have any updates on Lucas or any other player at the moment,” said Arteta ahead of Monday’s trip to Liverpool.

“We don’t discuss the things that we try to do in the market.”

Despite that, any of Matteo Guendouzi, Mesut Ozil, Shkodran Mustafi, Sokratis Papastathopoulos and Sead Kolasinac could also depart the club in the next week.
