'Together we can ensure Covid vaccine rollout is a success for the UK'

The Covid crisis could not be more grave and severe, the daily death toll is now at the highest level since April and our hospitals – despite the valiant work of NHS staff – are struggling to cope.

A third national lockdown has once again left many people isolated and alone. While this is a dark time for the country we are not without hope.

The path back to a normal life, where we no longer live under the bleak clouds of Covid, lies through the vaccination programme. Ensuring everyone gets the vaccine requires a huge national effort.

That is why the Mirror has joined forces with the Labour Party and the TUC to urge people to volunteer to help the NHS.

Together we can do it

Together we can amass a grassroots army that will make sure the vaccine can be rolled out to every town, village and city of Britain. This is a race against time. We would like to have confidence in the Government’s ability to meet its target of dispensing 14 million jabs by mid February.

But since the outbreak first struck we have become wearily familiar with Boris Johnson repeatedly over-promising and under-delivering.

Ministers failed to place a protective ring around care homes, failed to provide protective kit to frontline staff and failed to test in sufficient numbers.

We could stand by and watch them fail again. But it is all our interests that the vaccination programme succeeds.

Covid vaccines save lives

If we can do our bit, however small, we should. Whether it is volunteering, encouraging others to have the jab or countering false information about the vaccine.

When this country has faced moments of national crisis before it has been the footsoldiers, not the generals, who have come to the rescue.

Whether it was the men who fought in the trenches or the women in the munitions factories they served their country at its time of need. With the efforts of Mirror readers, Labour and the TUC we can get Britain vaccinated.
