Miller subjected the woman to physical and mental punishment if she “failed to meet a certain quota financially”, police said.

The torture included choking the woman in ice baths while being held under water, being burned and branded with a hot wire coat hanger and beatings with a belt.

The violence was carried out in front of the woman’s young children, who were “at times” beaten with a belt, police said.

The suspects operated from two national chain hotels in Pineville – the Comfort Suites on Centrum Parkway and the Quality Suites on Pineville-Matthews Road, police said.

An “extensive criminal investigation” into the human trafficking case had been underway for three weeks, including interviews, search warrants and undercover surveillance, police said.

Although human trafficking is “extremely rare” in Pineville, more women are believed to have been trafficked in connection with the case. police said.

“Our victim has been very brave in coming forward, and we hope that if there are more victims out there, then they, too, will be inspired to come forward.

“We also want them to know that there is help out there for them. Our victim in this case and her children have a long road of physical and mental recovery ahead of them.”

Miller was charged with human trafficking of an adult victim, sexual servitude of an adult victim, assault by strangulation, assault on a child under 12, assault on a female and communicating threats.

He remained in the Mecklenburg County jail on Friday.

Jail records also show a slew of previous offences including breaking and entering, credit card fraud, criminal conspiracy and assault with a gun.

Adams is free on bail pending trial.
