Thomas Tuchel has challenged Ruben Loftus-Cheek to earn a place in Chelsea’s squad this summer.

The 25-year-old impressed under Maurizio Sarri during Chelsea’s 2018-19 campaign but an Achilles injury in a post-season friendly in the United States ruled him out for the majority of the following season with Frank Lampard.

Loftus-Cheek joined Fulham on loan last season in order to get regular playing time and he was able to make 32 appearances in all competitions.

The midfielder began pre-season training with Chelsea earlier this summer and featured in the 2-1 victory over Arsenal on Sunday.

Speaking after the match, Tuchel admitted that a decision has not yet been made over Loftus-Cheek’s future and indicated that he could still have a role to play at Stamford Bridge this season.

‘Generally, I am happy and that’s why he plays, he deserves to play at this point of the preparation,’ Tuchel said.

‘But I think he can do even more, he can show up more. He can show more physical capability and drive more with the ball.

‘I’m never satisfied with him, I have the feeling we need to push him to the absolute limit.

‘It’s too early to judge Ruben. He has everything in his hands and it’s on him to decide his own future like every player.

‘He has to keep on going 150 per cent because 100 per cent is not enough.’
