Chelsea have moved swiftly to recruit Frank Lampard’s successor and have confirmed the appointment of Thomas Tuchel as their new manager.

Lampard was sacked the day after guiding Chelsea to the fifth round of the FA Cup with a 3-1 win over Luton Town but his side had won just one of their past five Premier League matches.

With Chelsea in ninth place, Roman Abramovich pulled the trigger on the club legend – ending his reign in charge after just 18 months.

Tuchel arrives with far more experience than his predecessor. He won the DFB-Pokal during his time with Borussia Dortmund, having made his name at Mainz, before winning two league titles, the Coupe de France, the Coupe de la Ligue as Paris Saint-Germain manager, while also guiding them to last season’s Champions League final.

The German manager believes there is a great foundation for him to build upon after Lampard’s work.

‘I would like to thank Chelsea FC for their confidence in me and my staff,’ said Tuchel after his appointment.

‘We all have the greatest respect for Frank Lampard’s work and the legacy he created at Chelsea,’

‘At the same time, I cannot wait to meet my new team and compete in the most exciting league in football.

‘I am grateful to now be part of the Chelsea family – it feels amazing!’

Chelsea director Marina Granovskaia added: ‘It is never easy to change head coach in the middle of the season but we are very happy to secure one of Europe’s best coaches in Thomas Tuchel.

‘There is still much to play for and much to achieve, this season and beyond. We welcome Thomas to the club.’
