Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel has hailed Edinson Cavani’s self-discipline and fitness as the keys to the striker’s longevity, insisting he is ‘always ready to suffer’ for the team.

Cavani has missed Manchester United’s last three games with a muscle injury but Ole Gunnar Solskjaer remains hopeful he will recover in time for his side’s trip to Stamford Bridge on Sunday.

The Uruguayan joined United from Paris Saint-Germain were Tuchel managed him for two seasons in the French capital.

Cavani has thrived in the Premier League since his arrival on these shores with Tuchel praising his commitment, insisting he and Blues striker Olivier Giroud possess the professionalism and drive that enables them to keep having an impact at the highest level.

‘Look at them when they [Cavani and Giroud] switch shirts! They are totally fit,’ Tuchel said when asked of the strikers’ secrets to longevity at a press conference on Friday.

‘Their fitness is key. Oli is 100 per cent fit. Zero body fat. Same as Edi. He is a player like Oli who as a no9 is always concerned about the team, always ready to suffer for the team.

‘Always ready to sacrifice, to do runs and open spaces, to defend with the whole team.

‘This is the characteristic of them both. In the box, they are both excellent finishers, they don’t get nervous, they have the composure. Both are top quality strikers. And for me their fitness and self-discipline is key.’

United head to Chelsea in second place, six points clear of Chelsea who hope to reclaim their place in the top four this weekend.
