Thiago Silva has revealed he received a ringing endorsement of new club Chelsea from former Blue and compatriot Willian before making the switch to Stamford Bridge.

Silva left Paris Saint-Germain after eight years at Ligue 1 side in which he won seven league titles, joining Chelsea on a free transfer.

The 36-year-old made his debut in the 6-0 Carabao Cup win over Barnsley on Wednesday, showing glimpses of the value he can add to Frank Lampard’s side.

Silva’s final game for PSG was their Champions League defeat at the hands of Bayern Munich, and after the game, Silva spoke to fellow Brazilian Willian to seek advice about a move to Chelsea.

Willian – who has made the switch across north London to rivals Arsenal – encouraged his international team-mate to join Lampard’s side.

‘As soon as the Champions League was over I spoke to Willian,’ Silva told BBC’s Football Focus.

‘He spoke very highly of Chelsea to me, he said, ‘Go, you’ll be really happy, the people there are great”.

Speaking after their emphatic win over Barnsley, Lampard expressed his delight over Silva’s impact on and off the pitch.

‘It is exciting for us because he has had just over a week training with us,’ said the English boss.

‘It was a perfect 60 minutes for him tonight. He will show the qualities he has. Of course, he will get fitter and better. He also gave us something for me on the night in the dressing room and on the pitch of a leader with authority in terms of his demands on others.

‘He can’t speak the language but at the minute that’s not even a problem because his presence and the way he commands people around him is already showing that to me in training and in our game tonight.

‘I am very very pleased with Thiago. It is what I expected of a player of his level but it is very refreshing to have him here at the club.’
