Chelsea splashed out over £200million on new recruits back in the summer, but Tim Sherwood believes free transfer Thiago Silva was Frank Lampard’s best signing of the last transfer window.

The club’s extraordinary recruitment drive saw them bring in the likes of Kai Havertz, Timo Werner, Hakim Ziyech, Ben Chilwell and Edouard Mendy.

Some eyebrows were raised when Silva, 36, was signed after his contract expired at Paris Saint-Germain in June.

But the experienced Brazilian has added a new dimension to Chelsea’s defence, bringing leadership and a calming presence which had previously been missing.

With the likes of Havertz and Werner both struggling of late and Ziyech battling against injuries, former Tottenham manager feels Silva was Lampard’s smartest signing.

‘One thing’s for sure, they’ve signed someone in Thiago Silva who is his best signing, without doubt,’ Sherwood said on the Kelly and Wrighty Show.

‘Not only is he a great player with experience and strolls through games he also makes Kurt Zouma next to him better.

‘I think [Ben] Chilwell and [Reece] James in the full-back areas are fantastic, [N’Golo] Kante’s playing in his correct position now.’

With so many attacking options such as Havertz, Werner, Tammy Abraham, Olivier Giroud and Christian Pulisic, Lampard has taken the opportunity to rotate his team.

But Sherwood believes the Chelsea boss needs to nail down his strongest options in the forward positions and stick with them.

He added: ‘Is it Giroud, is it Tammy Abraham? He’s got so many options in forward areas of the field, Frank doesn’t know his best side and it’s very difficult to know.

‘You’ve just got to pick your best side and roll it out.’

‘The [area] where you’d think he’s got the most riches is the problem, the top end of the field,’ Sherwood continued.

‘He’s a kid in a sweet shop who likes every sweet and you can’t have them all. He needs to find his best solution, the best mix, and he can’t find it.’
