Veteran centre-back Thiago Silva has confirmed his intention to sign a contract extension with Chelsea after the club progressed to the semi-finals of the Champions League.

The Brazilian arrived at Stamford Bridge last summer on a free transfer from Paris Saint-Germain and has provided a steady, experienced head at the back in a young Chelsea team.

After a spell on the sidelines through injury, he started against Porto in Seville on Tuesday night – with the tie forced to be played at a neutral venue due to Covid travel restrictions – and gave another commanding display despite the side conceding deep into stoppage-time.

Chelsea always looked in control of the tie, having won the first leg 2-0, and should have had a bigger margin of victory by the time Mehdi Taremi netted a spectacular overhead kick with just seconds left on the clock.

The 2-1 aggregate victory over Porto sets up a Champions League semi-final against either Real Madrid or Liverpool – who play tonight – and marks Chelsea’s best run in the competition since 2014.

Thiago is clearly enjoying his time at Stamford Bridge, particularly since old PSG boss Thomas Tuchel was appointed, and he confirmed after Tuesday’s game that he would like to extend his stay at the club.

‘I hope to continue like this,’ the 36-year-old told Sky Sport Italia, with Chelsea having the option to automatically trigger a one-year extension to his contract.

‘I want to continue to play at this level and get to the World Cup in 2022.

‘Thomas Tuchel is doing an amazing job here at Chelsea.’

He added: ‘I’m looking at the example of [Paolo] Maldini, who played until he was 40 years old.

‘I spent six months with him [at AC Milan] and it was extraordinary. I hope to follow in Maldini’s path.’

Thiago has only featured in one of Chelsea’s last nine Premier League matches, having been struggling with a thigh injury before getting sent off on his return to action against West Brom at the start of the month.

He has made 24 appearances in all competitions across the season, however, and has been a key part of Chelsea’s improved defensive showings this year.
