Liverpool are set to be without midfielder Thiago Alcantara for at least the next two matches, Jurgen Klopp has revealed.

The Spaniard made his debut for the club as a second half substitute in a 2-0 win at Chelsea last weekend and he had hoped to make his first start for the club against Arsenal on Monday night.

However, the 29-year-old missed Liverpool’s final training session before the game at Anfield after sustaining an injury.

Klopp refused to reveal the nature of the injury but says the Spaniard will not be fit for the EFL Cup clash against Arsenal on Wednesday or the Premier League game away at Aston Villa next Sunday.

‘After the international break, he will be fine – for sure.

‘That’s the situation at the moment, he’s not fit enough to be involved.’

Alisson Becker was a major doubt for the visit of Arsenal having missed Saturday’s training session.

However, the Brazilian passed a late fitness test in order to start against the Gunners.

Liverpool found themselves behind when Alexandre Lacazette pounced on a mistake from Andy Robertson to score the opener but the Scot made amends by putting the Reds back in front at half-time after Sadio Mane had equalised.
