Manchester United talisman Bruno Fernandes has urged his team-mates to block out the club’s critics because they ‘only talk when you lose’.

The Portuguese midfielder has inspired United’s recent unbeaten run in the Premier League, which has left the club in second and three points behind Liverpool with a game in hand going into 2021.

Fernandes has been sensational since his £46million arrival from Sporting Lisbon 11 months ago and has been involved in 52% of the club’s goals in the league.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was under severe pressure earlier in the season after United lost two of their first three fixtures in the Premier League but they’ve lost just once in their following 12 matches.

Nevertheless, criticism is never too far away for the Norwegian and Fernandes says the club’s critics are lining up to talk the side down when they lose but are not forthcoming with praise when they win.

‘The club have a lot of media behind, a lot of people talking,’ Fernandes told Manchester United’s website.

‘They will be talking all the time. They want to talk when you lose, they don’t want to talk when you win, because it is better to attack than to defend the club.

‘I think the most important thing is, inside of the group, we understand what we have to do, what we have to improve, where we are and where we want to go.

‘For me, the most important thing is like when we lose, we are not the worst.’

United take on Aston Villa at New Year’s Day, knowing that they can go joint-top of the league with a win against Dean Smith’s side.

Fernandes looked particularly exhausted during United’s 1-0 win against Wolves on Tuesday but the midfielder provided his seventh assist of the league season to set-up Rashford for the late winner.

Solskjaer is expected to make a number of changes for the visit of Villa, meaning the likes of Scott McTominay, Fred and Daniel James could come back into the side.
