These are the 3 viral makeup trends we’ll ALL be trying this summer

If 2020 was all about skincare as a form of self-care, then 2021 is all about rediscovering makeup as a form of self-expression. After all, we’ve found our serum soulmate, mastered maskne and learnt how to be our own facialist, so now it’s high time we experience the joy of colour by tapping into the TikTok-worthy makeup looks sweeping our feeds.

But after a year sitting on the shelf, our makeup stash could do with a bit of an overhaul. Enter Boots and its extensive range of high-performance makeup brands and much-hyped hero products, from cult brands such as Fenty Beauty By Rihanna, NYX Professional Makeup, Morphe, KVD Vegan Beauty and Anastasia Beverly Hills, as well as trusted favourites from Laura Mercier, NARS, MAC and Estée Lauder.

To help you along the way, we’ve rounded up three of the biggest makeup trends taking over TikTok and Instagram right now, along with all of the products you’ll need to recreate them at home. The best bit? They’re all available under one roof at good ol’ Boots, making it easier than ever to tap into the joy of making makeup fun again, especially now lockdown is officially easing up and we’re allowed out for some IRL fun again.

Full, fluffy brows are one of the biggest makeup looks of the past few years and for good reason. More natural-looking than the power brow, fluffy brows are able to frame the face and add finesse to every makeup look. Luckily for those who aren’t naturally blessed in the brow department, they couldn’t be easier to recreate at-home using a few key makeup products.

First, brush up your natural brow hairs using ICONIC London Brow Silk & Brush. This 100% vegan formula will groom any stray hairs and create the illusion of fullness, all the while setting hairs perfectly in place. As soon as you’re happy with the effect, press lightly with your finger to set the hairs.

Next, you’ll need a precise and pigmented brow pencil to boost brows with hair-like strokes. Try Maybelline Tattoo Brow Semi Permanent 36H Eyebrow Pencil, which provides a waterproof, high-performance pigment to fill and shape brows. Using upwards, dash-like strokes, go over your brows’ natural shape to fill in any sparse areas and to boost colour.

For the final step, use a tinted brow gel to lock everything in place and add that final layer of definition. Turn to the brow queen Anastasia Beverly Hills and her Dipbrow Gel to help. Ths long-lasting, waterproof formula is available in 11 shades to suit all hair tones, and adheres to the natural hairs to build natural-looking dimension.

You’ve probably heard of negative space nail art, which involves painting a design on an otherwise bare nail, but the creative trend has now evolved to involve eye makeup, too, with negative space graphic eyeliner set to be one of the biggest makeup trends of the summer.

The key to the look is to keep the eyelid neutral, adding a touch of concealer to balance any redness and setting with a translucent powder to create a perfect base and help the eyeliner to last.

Next, it’s time to pick your liner. A matte black liner like Too Faced Killer Kajal Eyeliner makes for a classic take on the trend, and the 12-hour formula will prevent any smudging throughout the day. Alternatively, if you prefer a precision brush, we love Rimmel London Scandaleyes Precision Micro Eyeliner for its intense pigment and ultra-smooth finish. If you feel like adding a flash of colour, NYX Professional Makeup Epic Wear Liner Stick offers a range of bright, hyper-pigmented shades including Turquoise Storm, Pink Spirit and Blue Trip.

The shape of the line you draw is pretty much up to you. If you’re an eyeliner novice, why not add a simple flick to the outer corners for a subtle but fun finish, or if you’re a bit of an aficionado, amp up the volume with an exaggerated cat-eye and finish the look with a few coats of L’Oréal Paris Telescopic Mascara.

Green may not be the first colour you think of when deciding on your makeup look for the day ahead, but it’s quickly becoming a 2021 favourite having gone viral on TikTok. Whether emerald, grassy, neon or pastel, there’s a shade to suit every skintone and makeup taste.

If you’re keen to try your hand at negative space eyeliner, opt for Too Faced Killer Liner 36 Hour Waterproof Eyeliner in Killer Turquoise for a pop of sharp colour that never smudges, or if you’re a fan of smoky eyes, create an ombré effect with XX Revolution XXpress Eyeshadow Palette in XXtortion (try the deep green along the lashline and crease, buff out with the shimmery shade and add a pop of pink to the centre of lids).
