Just because staying in has become the new staying up all night, it doesn’t mean that seasonal glamour has to be any less ‘extra’ in 2020.
So, whether it’s a low-key Christmas dinner with the fam or back-to-back digital engagements, we’ll need to restock our ‘out-out’ favourites. And this year, Boots has got your back, with all you need to stay in and sparkle, under one roof.
Year round, the beauty halls at Boots are our go-to destination for everything from affordable No7 staples to much-hyped new releases from Fenty Beauty and Mac, but we all know that Christmas is the time for Boots to really shine.
This year is no different, with every must-have available to pick up in-store or online, including the latest essentials such as lipsticks that won’t smudge under facemasks, and flawless-finish foundations that really ‘pop’ on-screen. Best of all, we’re looking forward to restocking the show-stopper palettes from Nars and Urban Decay that we’ve missed glamming up in every weekend. After all, what could be a better excuse than Christmas to look and feel good again?
So, because we know we’d have YouTubed it anyway, we’re turning to the MUAs for some tips on how to recreate pro-worthy festive glamour in our own homes, and exactly which Boots products will help us achieve it.
Nothing screams Christmas-time beauty better than a classic claret lipstick. Beauty bloggger extraordinaire Saminah Choudhury, whose Insta tutorials we’ve had on repeat, created this striking festive lip look using products from Boots, including must-haves from Fenty Beauty, Ole Henriksen and KVD Vegan Beauty.
Step 1: Prime
Oozing old Hollywood glamour, this dramatic makeup look is perfectly primed for the small screen, whether you’ve got a virtual Christmas party to attend or Zoom karaoke. Start by applying Ole Henriksen C-Rush Brightening Gel Crème, then prime with Fenty Beauty Pro Filt’r Hydrating Primer.
For a lit-from-within skin finish like Saminah’s, Fenty Beauty Hydrating Longwear Foundation and Fenty Beauty Pro Filt’r Concealer are the two products she can’t Christmas without. “This foundation comes in 50 shades, which correspond with the concealers to make everything so, so easy!” says Saminah.
Step 2: Build
Lightly dust KVD Vegan Beauty Lock It Setting Powder to set your base in place, then Saminah recommends Fenty Beauty Sun Stalk’r Instant Warmth Bronzer. “This is my favourite bronzer, ever! It makes you look so sun-kissed and blends out amazingly.”
For that rosy glow, lightly tap Fenty Beauty Cheeks Out Freestyle Cream Blush in Strawberry Drip on cheekbones to finish.
Step 3: Shine
Get bold brows using Fenty Beauty Brow MVP Brow Pencil, a “long-wearing and easy-to-use product,” according to beauty guru Saminah, who also rates Fenty Beauty Flyliner as her top pick for achieving that dramatic winged look.
To create subtle gold lids, Saminah suggests using Fenty Beauty Killawatt Freestyle Highlighter in the shade Mean Money/Hu$tla Baby, not just above her cheekbones and her temples, but also as an eyeshadow – because festive makeup demands next-level shimmer. For lashes, use KVD Vegan Beauty Go Big Or Go Home Mascara.
Step 4: Define
Most importantly, that sultry Santa Baby lip was created in the Outlaw shade of KVD Vegan Beauty Kitten Mini Everlasting Liquid Lipstick and defined with KVD Vegan Beauty Everlasting Lip Liner.
“Omg, this lipstick has the most amazing staying power,” says Saminah. “Even if you’re wearing a mask, you do not have to worry about this budging.”
Pro MUA Lisa Caldognetto has road-tested some of the hottest new beauty brands to land at Boots in the past year, including Laura Mercier, Becca, Huda Beauty and Too Faced, so she can share a soft glam glitter look that will take you from the dinner table to the digital after-party.
Step 1: Ready
It all starts with Wishful Honey Balm Moisturizer to illuminate the skin, followed by Urban Decay All Night Primer. Lisa uses Mac Studio Fix Fluid SPF15 Foundation – a staple in most aficionados’ makeup bags – to give smooth coverage that translates well onto laptop screens and selfie cams. Lisa says: “This is medium-to-full coverage with a matte finish, so it’s perfect to last all day!” She dots on some Nars Radiant Creamy Concealer for added coverage.
Step 2: Set
Becca Sunlit Bronzer in Bronzed Bondi defines the brows and lifts cheekbones, while Nars Liquid Blush in Orgasm will make your complexion warm, even when it’s cold outside. Use the Iconic London Illuminator in Original to highlight your best features then set the look using Laura Mercier Translucent Powder to control shine and ensure long-lasting wear.
Step 3: Disco
Finally, for glam glitter eyes that put the sparkle back into 2020, the Urban Decay Stoned Vibes Eyeshadow Palette features a dozen stone-speckled shimmery shades – four matte tones and eight prismatic – perfect for the 12 days of Christmas (and onto a very dazzling New Year.)
Lisa’s pro application tips include spraying the brush with MAC Prep + Prime Fix+ to enhance the pigments of the glitter. She adds: “Bounce the brush to apply the colour. This layers the glitter really beautifully for that extra sparkle. Apply the eyeshadow to the centre and inner corner to make your eyes more dazzling than a disco ball!”
To complete the eyes, she uses Huda Beauty Life Liner and Too Faced Better Than Sex Mascara, set off with subtle pink lips courtesy of Laura Mercier Rouge Essentiel Lipstick and Laura Mercier Lip Glacé.
Since we know that self-care shouldn’t have to cost the world, No7 makeup artist and educator Emily Simms shows us how to create a covetable winter glow on a budget: we’re talking flushed cheeks and shiny lips. Using only products from Boots own best-selling beauty brand No7, Emily proves that professional-level makeup can be both affordable and super-achievable at home.
Step 1: Illuminate
Create that studio-lit, ‘ready-for-my-close-up’ glow using No7 Illuminating Powder dusted on the high points of the face. Warm it up using the luxurious No7 Perfectly Bronzed Dual Bronzer, making it super-easy to ‘faux’ your winter-sun glow (because who even made it out of the UK this winter, anyway?)
Emily suggests: “Take a No7 Powder Brush to both colours, tap off the excess and sweep around the forehead, cheekbone and jawline. Then a little bit over the bridge of your nose.”
Step 2: Glow
Just because your blusher didn’t come with a ££ price tag, it doesn’t mean you can’t look a million dollars. Emily adds a pop of cheek colour with No7 Match Made Powder Blusher, which comes in seven rosy shades that remind us how much we’ve missed our makeup bags. She chooses Damson Mist applied with the No7 Face Brush.
Step 3: Pout
Recommending her favourite Boots product of the season, Emily says: “No7 Moisture Drench lipsticks are packed full of hydrations so they’re really great for this time of year to keep your lips smooth.”
For maximum hold on your lipstick (Emily loves the suitably festive Iced Pink shade), first line the lips with No7 Precision Lips Pencil in Nude, then shade the whole lip. Add a finishing, shine with No7 High Shine Lip Glossin Translucent.
