There are nine different workplace personalities – which one are you?

Who you are in the workplace tends to be a bit different to who you are when you’re not on the clock.

You might be super-proactive and organised at work, but terrible at sorting out your own life admin.

Or maybe you’re happy to fade into the background in the office, but are the life of the party outside of it.

Getting to know your different selves can be handy, so you can adjust your office life to fit your particular working style.

According to research from Belbin, there are nine distinct types of personalities in the workplace – so you’ll likely fall into one of these categories.

Which one describes you best?

The monitor evaluator

If you’re this type, you make fact-based decisions, looking to data rather than emotions or gut instict.

This is handy in lots of cases, but it might be worth chatting to other people in your workplace to check that your decisions aren’t having unintended effects on their happiness at work.

The specialist

If you’re this type, you have a lot of knowledge in one specific topic. People in your office will come to you the moment they have a question or concern about this one particular thing; whether that’s selling a product or navigating a tricky client.

You tend to be introverted, but are good at contributing to projects in your area of expertise.

The plant

Plants are creative thinkers and ideas people, and are great at coming up with big projects and strategy. If you’re a plant, you might prefer to work alone – make sure you’re feeding ideas into the team and having collaborative talks to ensure everyone’s thoughts are heard.

The shaper

The shaper is the person who is good at moving plans forward. They tend to be driven and know how to see a task through to completion. Because of this drive, they make good managers.

The implementer

You’re organised, practical, and are able to actually put big ideas into action.

You like structure, and have a tendency to work in ways that you’re used to. Try to stay flexible and open to new approaches.

The completer/finisher

Finishers have a good eye for detail and like to see projects through to the end. They have high standards and can expect others in the team to have the same.

If you’re a finisher, you might heap on a little too much pressure – check in with workers to ensure they’re not collapsing under the strain.

The co-ordinator

You’re a people person. You make a great manager, as you tend to focus on people’s needs rather than rigidly sticking to a decided strategy.

The team worker

If you’re this type, you are super adaptable, get on well with people you work with, and enjoy teamwork. You’re great at helping other people make projects work.

Just make sure you shout about your accomplishments – it’s easy for your hard work to go unnoticed.

The resource investigator

Resource investigators are good at interacting with people, too, but particularly those outside the organisation they work for.

They tend to be very extroverted and have a large network of contacts, they are able to source items and services easily and can get the tools or services needed to put any plans or ideas into place.

So, those are the regular nine office personalities. But after over a year of working from home, it’s thought that seven more personalities have emerged.

Avantika Vaishnav, marketing manager at Debut says: ‘Working from home has really changed everyone.

‘Whether you are an introvert or an extrovert, it has shifted our perspective of working and most importantly our priorities. It has given a fresh outlook on how we value our time and has also provided an interesting insight into our true personalities – and perhaps how it differed to when we were in an office environment.’

This means that while you might have had one of the personality types above pre-pandemic, you may have gone through some changes and adopted a second type in lockdown.



Seven working personality types that emerged in lockdown:

  • The video-lovers: You know, the one who absolutely loves Zoom calls, and insists that every chat would be better with cameras on.
  • The baker: Non-stop cakes, bread, and biscuits.
  • The unmuted typer: There’s always one person who just doesn’t get that they need to mute themselves when they’re not talking.
  • The technically challenged: And there’s always one (sometimes the same person as above) who can’t get any technical stuff right, whether it’s logging into Slack or being unable to turn their camera on when asked.
  • The frazzled parent: You’ll spot this type because they look stressed and distracted. You might also catch a child barging into the home office space and demanding snacks.
  • The cross-talker: They’re always talking over someone. Always.
  • The wellness addict: Every time you chat, they’re on some new type of health kick, whether it’s going for a run on their lunch break or intermittent fasting.

It’s a good idea to get to know your type – both pre-pandemic and after the arrival of working from home – and the type of people you’re working with.

Getting to know each type and slotting people into these categories can help you work with them more effectively.

‘Many people who thought they enjoyed the silence and isolation of working alone may have found they seek company to be productive in work or vice versa,’ Avantika explains. ‘It’s been a tough year and the transition back to office life and working around others may be the toughest part for many.

‘Back-to-office anxiety is real and many people will suffer, so be sure to know your employees’ personality traits and how you can make this change as comfortable as possible.’
