The best new books coming out this August

Ah, there’s nothing like the joy of getting stuck into new books. Seriously: is there anything better than relaxing in the sunshine with your favourite cocktail, a copy of the newest, must-read book and your out of office happily on? About damn time.

Wherever you’re spending the next few weeks – home, away or a bit of both – August is the perfect month to kick back, ditch that social feed and never-ending to do list and take some well-
deserved time for you. And there’s nothing that better offers the total and utter escapism of a new book you just can’t put down.

If you’re after sizzling romance, a gripping thriller, transportive historical fiction, spellbinding fantasy or non-fiction that you won’t stop thinking and talking about, there are plenty of brilliant books coming out this month to choose from and we’ve got you covered.

In the fiction corner, is the highly anticipated Carrie Soto is Back, from the viral sensation Taylor Jenkins Reid (of The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo fame). Fans of Florence Given have literally been counting down the days until her debut novel Girl Crush is released, a dark feminist queer comedy which is going to be a sure fire hit on every home page. Be warned – The Last White Man will keep you reading late into the night, exploring race and identity in a dystopian setting.

New non-fiction that will challenge, empower and move your soul includes Travis Alabanza’s powerful exploration of life outside the parameters of gender binaries and Kit de Waal’s incredibly moving memoir of her childhood that is intimate and will inspire its readers. It’s a great month in book land, there are some total gems below that you won’t want to miss.

After more books content? We’ve got sleep books, cookbooks, poetry books, romance novels, true crime books, autobiographies, vegetarian cookbooks, mental health books and adult colouring books. We’ve also got coffee table books, summer books, vegan cookbooks and books by black authors. Don’t say we don’t treat you.
