Teenager thought she had appendicitis – but she was actually in labour with a surprise baby

When Nadia Rhoads, 19, began experiencing severe cramps in her side and back, she assumed she was struggling with appendicitis.

But when her boyfriend, Brad O’Donnell, 22, rushed her to St Joseph Hospital in Warren, Ohio, US, her doctors diagnosed her with something very different: Nadia was pregnant and in labour with a surprise baby.

This came as a total shock to the teenager, who was taking birth control (and had been for years) and hadn’t gained any weight throughout her pregnancy.

By the time she found out she was pregnant, Nadia was already eight centimetres dilated.

Nadia said: ‘I was just so shocked. I texted my mum and I sent her a picture of the monitors and I was like: “Um I’m in labour, just thought you should know!”

‘She called me back freaking out but she was really happy.’

Nadia had been taking the contraceptive pill when her daughter Delaney was conceived, around April 15, 2020, so didn’t ever consider the possibility that she could be pregnant.

Her periods had been a bit spotty beforehand, but they continued to arrive every month around the same time.

She felt ‘mostly normal’ throughout the nine months, and remained a US size 14.

‘I had really bad back pain and I was always super tired, I didn’t think much of it because I was working full time on my feet all for nine hours a day.

‘I also started really liking spicy foods but I figured that I just started to like it.’

It was only when painful cramps kept her awake that Nadia realised something was different.

After a quick check-up, doctors had Nadia take a pregnancy test, which revealed that not only was she pregnant, but she was already in labour.

‘I was surprised and in shock, especially because I was in labour already so there was no time to prepare anything,’ remembers Nadia.

An ER nurse had to go out to the car park to reassure Brad that his girlfriend was not seriously ill – and break the news that a baby was on the way.

After 14 hours of labour, Delaney Mae O’Donnell was born weighing a healthy 6lbs 11oz, and went home to meet the three cats and start life as part of a family-of-three.

Nadia, who was studying to be a cosmetologist at Raphael’s School of Beauty, had to delay her studies to look after her surprise child, but is loving being a parent.

‘It took me a few months to kind of adjust everything and kind of feel like a mom,’ said Nadia.

‘But now I’m for sure adjusted and I enjoy it, I do feel like a mom now.

‘Everyone loves Delaney and she’s brought so much joy to all of our lives.

‘I wanted those that have been through the same thing as me to know they aren’t alone.

‘I also want to share that things like this can and do happen, and that our bodies are crazy and can do crazy and amazing things.’
