We debate the hearings that this week saw France have its European Commission candidate rejected for the first time ever. Sylvie Goulard was singled out for special scrutiny over her work for an American think tank, as well as a long-running investigation into alleged fake jobs within her Modem party. Two other candidates got binned before they even made it to their grillings, with the nominees from Hungary and Romania also failing to allay conflict of interest concerns. We ask whether – as Emmanuel Macron claims – political games have been played, rather than true scrutiny being doled out.
