Susanna Reid mocks Boris Johnson for hiding in fridge to escape GMB interview

Good Morning Britain host Susanna Reid couldn’t help but mock Boris Johnson for the time he hid in a fridge to avoid an interview on the ITV show.

Susanna reminded viewers about the notorious moment the UK Prime Minister dodged questions from the GMB reporter before the 2019 General Election.

The dig came as the PM faces another Downing Street controversy.

The Tory is currently fighting to save his premiership after it was revealed a “bring your own booze” gathering was held at his official residence during the first coronavirus lockdown.

Susanna reminisced: “It was just before the general election back in 2019 and Boris Johnson notoriously does not do interviews with Good Morning Britain,” before a calendar appeared on screen showing it has been a grand total of 1,637 days since the PM appeared on the show.

Johnson made an apology in the House of Commons today after attending a party while the rest of the nation was under strict instructions to isolate.

Susanna explained that the previous incident took place in the lead up to the general election.

Reporter Jonathan Swain had gone to a dairy that Johnson was visiting to ask him a few questions.

Jonathan explained as he was stood outside Downing Street: “It’s still etched in my memory. I think we need to go back up to check that he’s still not in there!

“We tried to get him onto the programme didn’t we for months and months and months? And the only way we could do it was to try and ‘doorstep’ him.

“And he gave us assurances, even that morning, saying ‘I’ll be right out, I’ll be right out,’ as he loaded a cart up with milk and then he decided he still didn’t want to come on GMB.”

He added: “After all of that, he decided he’d had enough, he decided to go into a fridge and we didn’t see him.”

Swain told Johnson he was live on air and Johnson replied “I’ll be with you in a second” before the PM and his aids walked into a milk fridge.

Viewers took to Twitter to vent their frustrations at the Prime Minister and his avoidance of GMB as he faces another scandal.

One user wrote: “Because he is scared of the back lash of the whole handling of the pandemic, it’s like the old saying Don’t do as I do but so as I say. And its one rule for them and and another rule for us.”

“You need some cheese and wine, he’ll be there like a shot,” another joked.

Someone else said: “Just tell him it’s a party. He’ll be there like a shot.”

As the PM addressed parliament today during PMQ’s to apologise for the latest party scandal, Susanna Reid took to Twitter to vent her frustrations at the leadership.

She wrote across multiple tweets: “An apology with an excuse is not an apology.

“If the garden was an extension of the office, why did the party require an email invitation and a request to “bring your own booze”?

“Ah, finally he’s resorted to his favourite get-out-of-jail card – the vaccine rollout #PMQS.

“I feel sad today about what the Prime Minister has said today & the way it was said. The fact the rules weren’t applied to the rule-makers while the whole of the rest of the country was being rigorous to the point of suffering devastating pain and loneliness. It feels shameless.”

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays from 6am on ITV.
