Super Mario Maker 2 overtakes Crash Team Racing for UK number one

Super Mario Maker 2 – making a tidy profit for Nintendo

Mario has beaten Crash Bandicoot for the top spot in the UK sales charts, as F1 2019 and Judgment also perform well.

Despite enjoying the third biggest launch of the year (behind Days Gone and Resident Evil 2), Crash Team Racing has lost the number one spot in the UK physical sales charts after just one week, even though it saw sales drop by only 48%.

It’s replaced by Super Mario Maker 2, which has become the biggest Nintendo Switch exclusive of the year so far – which isn’t much of a claim given how few games there have been, but it does mean it beat Wii U port New Super Mario Bros U Deluxe.

The game’s success came at the same time as a major marketing push for the console, with most recent Switch titles also moving up the charts.

This included Bloodstained: Ritual Of The Night, which came out a week after the other console versions, and has suffered reports of technical problems, but whose first week of physical sales was still sold more than the debut of the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 versions combined.

Other games performing well were F1 2019, which made it to number three in the all formats chart (the individual format charts aren’t in yet) and sold almost exactly the same as last year’s version despite launching earlier in the year.

Yakuza spin-off Judgment also did surprisingly well, coming in at number four, and seems to be further proof of a renewed interest in the franchise amongst UK gamers.

Given the time of year it was a surprisingly busy week for new releases all round, with Lovecraftian horror The Sinking City appearing at number 12 and Car Mechanic Simulator debuting at number 23.

With no major releases due at retail this week (although Strange Things 3: The Game will be available digitally) it’ll be interesting to see whether Super Mario Maker can retain its number one spot or if Crash Team Racing will retake the lead.
