Back during the glory days of The Only Way Is Essex, viewers were stunned when Tom Fletcher popped up on their screens.

The McFly singer, who is competing in this year’s Strictly Come Dancing with pro dance partner Amy Dowden, was sat on his sofa when TOWIE favourite Mario Falcone popped round for a visit in 2012.

At the time, few people were aware that Mario is Tom’s brother-in-law, as the musician married the reality TV star’s sister Giovanna.

It was actually Giovanna who answered the door to Mario, who then went to get some much-needed relationship advice from Tom.

Mario was concerned about then fiancée Lucy Mecklenburgh, who hadn’t really been keen on making any solid wedding plans, fearing that she didn’t want to get married to him after all.

Tom did his best to try and look concerned while Mario ranted about his problems with Lucy, including the fact she had changed her hair colour to blonde.

Finally plucking up the courage to talk on camera, Tom said nervously: “The only way to really resolve it is for you to just grow some balls and talk to her.”

So Mario took that advice on board and went to have a deep chat with Lucy about their future.

Over dinner, he confronted Lucy about her evasive tactics when asked about the wedding.

He told her: “Every time you talk about the wedding you say you’re too young. You’re more negative than you are positive and you’re not ready to do it.”

Lucy tried to explain that wasn’t ready to walk down the aisle at 21, to which Mario snapped: “I don’t want to be engaged then.”

She managed to get what she was really feeling off her chest and said she didn’t completely trust her man and something didn’t feel right.

Clearly fuming, Mario then declared “I’m done” and walked out.

When Tom watched the show back he saw the funny side and told viewers not to blame him for the break up.

Seeing the funny side online, Tom wrote on Twitter after the ITV2 show: ‘He’s grown some… and got kicked in them. Last time he listens to his brother in law… #dontblametom

While Tom secured a cameo on TOWIE, wife Giovanna was brutally snubbed from the show.

Giovanna took a lot of convincing to film alongside her brother, but stepped in front of the camera for a scene at home.

Anxious Giovanna was very hesitant at the start and took a lot of convincing to go on camera for a scene with Mario.

“They talked me into being part of the scene. They really had to talk me into it. It was a massive thing for me to say I’ll do it,” explained the I’m A Celebrity winner to her fellow campmates last year..

However, Giovanna was gutted when producers decided to cut her moment on the show – with it having taken a lot of courage for her to agree to filming.

“And then I got cut. I was more upset about being cut. I am not Towie enough,” she joked.

What made the move even more controversial was that Mario’s other sister, Giorgina, did appear on TOWIE as well as Tom.

Mario was seen turning to his sister for some relationship advice when he was having problems with Lucy back in 2012.

After discussing the drama, the laughed about their mum walking in on Mario having sex in his single bed.

Former EastEnders star Shane Richie told Giovanna he had experienced similar pain after being turned down for work with Mr Tumble.

Giving him some words of wisdom, Giovanna said: “Sometimes you’re just not wanted. And that’s ok. You sort of keep riding the wave. Sometimes Towie doesn’t want you. Sometimes Mr Tumble doesn’t want you but someone will.”
