Steve McClaren feels Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer needs signings in three key areas in the summer transfer window.

The Red Devils spurned their chance to end the season on a high when they were beaten by Villarreal in the Europa League final in Gdansk on Wednesday night.

Unai Emery’s side emerged victorious with a 11-10 penalty shootout victory after United goalkeeper David de Gea missed his spot-kick.

United finished second in the Premier League, 12 points behind champions and city rivals Manchester City.

With the summer transfer window looming, Sir Alex Ferguson’s former assistant McClaren believes Solskjaer requires a centre-back, centre-forward and a winger.

‘It’s a key summer for everybody, Ole especially,’ McClaren told Sky Sports.

‘Because you look at [Louis] Van Gaal, he won the FA Cup, he was sacked. You look at [Jose] Mourinho, second in the league, won the Europa League, didn’t get a good start, he was sacked.

‘So Ole needs a good summer and a good start [to the season], he needs to buy a centre-half with Harry Maguire, he needs depth in there as well, more quality.

‘He needs a centre-forward, a lot has been talked about Harry Kane, if Harry Kane goes to Manchester United all of a sudden that would propel them into title contenders, not just that but Champions League contenders because that will be a hell of a front four

‘And also a winger, yes they’ve got [Marcus] Rashford, yes they’ve got [Mason] Greenwood but they need an extra one, extra impetus.’
