Stephen Merchant has recalled being propositioned by a doctor while his trousers were around his ankles as he received some treatment.

The 47-year-old TV star was filming a project in Croatia when he was struck down with a violent bout of food poisoning – prompting him to seek medical help from a medic.

Stephen was assessed by a doctor who turned out to be a huge fan of the Outlaws star and tried his luck for a photo alongside him.

Unfortunately for Stephen, however, his moment of recognition came at a particularly vulnerable moment as he had his bum exposed in preparation for an injection.

Baring all to The Sun, Stephen explained: “This doctor comes and he examines me and he says, ‘I’ll give you an injection to loosen your stomach muscles. Drop your pyjamas and turn around, because I’ve got to put it in your posterior’.

“And he gets this bloody great syringe out and he’s about to put it in, and he goes, ‘Are you Stephen Merchant?’.

“My first thought was, ‘Has he recognised me from my behind? Am I like the Croatian Kim Kardashian or something?’.

“So he puts this injection in and goes, ‘Don’t suppose I could get a selfie?’ “

Stephen’s experience with the curse of fame echoes complaints from fellow stars including Daniel Craig who hate being approached for photos at the worst time.
The James Bond actor said previously that he has been distressed by people trying to take a snap of him while he is in public toilets.

He explained during a past interview: “People try to take pictures of me when I’m having a piss and it’s not welcome and never will be”.

He added: ”I have to keep hold of my sense of humor, because you can lose it very quickly and start retreating into yourself – then you can’t go anywhere unless you’re with armed guards”.

Elsewhere, talkshow icon Oprah Winfrey once said she didn’t realise she was famous until she was recognised at a less than ideal moment.

She said previously: “There are moments, like in the bathroom stall at O’Hare Airport, you hear, ‘Is that her?’ ‘Did she gain the weight back?’ ‘She’s shorter than I thought.’

“Once I walked out and three women applauded. That is when I knew: I am famous.”

Meanwhile, Stephen’s TV series The Outlaw drew gasps during a recent episode when a character played by Christopher Walken was shown destroying an original Banksy graffiti design worth £10 million.

A spokesperson for The Outlaws told The Mail: ‘We can confirm that the artwork at the end of The Outlaws was an original Banksy, and that Christopher Walken painted over that artwork during the filming of this scene, ultimately destroying it.”

However, the destruction of the artwork was approved by the artist himself who gave the green light under the condition that it was his idol, Christopher, who should be the one to paint over it.
