Solskjaer's previous comments on "warrior" Cavani hinted at transfer move

Manchester United are close to completing their second signing of the summer after they agreed a two-year deal with free agent Edinson Cavani.

The former PSG striker is set to fly in to Manchester on Sunday to complete a medical, with the move expected to be announced in the evening.

It is believed Cavani will earn an eyewatering £200,000-a-week while he is at Old Trafford, and United fans will be hoping he can be as prolific as he has been in the past for the likes of PSG and Napoli.

One man who is clearly a fan of the player is his soon-to-be new manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Edinson Cavani has been praised by a number of high-profile figures in football

The United boss spoke out about his admiration of Cavani ahead of his side’s famous Champions League last-16 win against PSG in the 2018-19 season, praising the team’s front three which comprised Cavani, Kylian Mbappe and Neymar.

“Paris Saint-Germain is one of the toughest [draws] you can get, but one we look forward to, I have to say,” Solskjaer told UEFA. “Their front three is probably the best front three outside of Manchester.

“Cavani is like a viking, like the ones you see in videos, like a warrior almost!”

Solskjaer is not the only former United striker who has praised Cavani in the past, with Old Trafford icon Ruud van Nistelrooy comparing the Uruguayan to himself.

Big things will be expected of Cavani at Manchester United

When asked which current striker is most similar to him, Van Nistelrooy replied: “An out-and-out No.9 would be Edinson Cavani.

“He’s a very strong player with great movement in and out of the box. He also helps the team with his hold-up play and is a great No.9.”

If Cavani can live up to the words of the likes of Solskjaer and Van Nistelrooy, he could well prove to be quite a hit in Manchester, and there is no doubt his signing will give the club a much-needed boost after their summer of frustration.
