Snapchat has just announced a new feature called 3D Camera Mode that lets users send and receive 3D snaps.

This new kind of photo adds depth and allows anyone to superimpose frames, captions and accessories at different depths within the picture.

If you receive a 3D snap and move your phone around then the perspective of the picture will adjust accordingly.

Sadly, there’s a bit of a catch. Only users with an iPhone X (from 2017) or above will be able to take advantage and create the 3D snaps. The feature uses the phone’s TrueDepth camera (which is also used for FaceID) and older models of iPhone don’t have it.

However, any phone (iPhone or Android) can still receive the snaps and view the shifting perspective.

‘With the introduction of depth and interaction, Snaps can capture even more detail about how the world looks and how you feel.  Together with our new 3D Effects, this feature adds a new layer of expression to bring your Snaps to life in a way that’s a step closer to the real thing,’ commented Andrew McPhee, senior manager of exploration at Snap.
