Experts are predicting the jobless total could hit three million — a level not seen since the 1980s. Firms including Boots, John Lewis and Rolls-Royce have all announced plans to axe thousands of staff.

But while the jobs market is undeniably tough, there IS still hope.

Chancellor Rishi Sunak has pledged to put “jobs, jobs, jobs” at the heart of his economic recovery — and today The Sun promises that we’ll bring “jobs, jobs, jobs” to YOU. We will regularly showcase tens of thousands of new jobs from firms around the UK, starting with more than 20,000 on this Sunemployment special today.

One jobs boom is in DIY

Need a CV? Guru James helps

LOSING your job is a shock – but right now you’re not alone.

We’ve teamed up with James Innes, whose firm jamesinnes.com helps with CVs, interview technique and LinkedIn profiles, to help you bounce back after redundancy.

James says: “With the jobs market pretty saturated, finding a new job might take a little longer.

“Focus on your mental wellbeing, get 30 minutes of daily exercise and be patient.”

Here are his top tips:

  1. Update and enhance your CV. Ensure that it is achievement-focused, tailored to each position that you target and error-free.
  2. Set up a LinkedIn profile. The vast majority of recruiters look on LinkedIn first, so make sure yours is updated, keyword-optimised and tells your story.
  3. Be proactive. Recruiters will not know that you are looking for work unless you tell them. Reach out via LinkedIn but also pick up the phone and keep reminding them you are out there.
  4. Get networking. Ask your friends and family to help. They may not be able to get you a job directly, but they may know someone who might.
  5. Stay current. Keep on top of the latest jobs, careers and employment-related news and even set up Google alerts for companies and industries that you are targeting.
  6. Be flexible and open minded. The job role you were doing before may no longer exist so think about how your skills might be transferable to other industries.
  7. Boost your skills and experience. Volunteering is a great way to make the most of your time out of work and to add value to your CV. You can also take the opportunity to learn something new through online training or even formal education.
