Shkodran Mustafi’s agent appears to have confirmed that talks have taken place with Barcelona over a possible move for the defender in the January transfer window.

The much-maligned 28-year-old centre-back is yet to start under Mikel Arteta in the Premier League this season and looks set for the exit door at the Emirates, with his contract due to expire at the end of the campaign.

It’s understood Mustafi turned down Arsenal’s offer of a new deal in the summer and there’s been mounting speculation the Germany international could be set for an audacious switch to the Camp Nou, with Ronald Koeman on the hunt for defensive reinforcements.

Rapid Vienna’s Yusuf Demir, 17, has also been heavily linked with Barca and the youngster’s agent, Emre Ozturk, fuelled rumours of a move by uploading a picture from Barcelona with the caption ‘ready for meeting’.

And while it was widely assumed Ozturk had travelled to Catalonia to discuss Demir’s future, he has since revealed the real reason for his visit.

‘I’m not in Barcelona because of Yusuf Demir, but because of Shkodran Mustafi from Arsenal, who we also represent,’ he told SPOX.

Speaking after Arsenal’s Carabao Cup quarter-final defeat to Manchester City, Arteta suggested there would be plenty of movement at the club this winter when pressed on his plans for the January transfer window.

‘We are looking at options that we have, players coming in and out we will see what happens,’ the Arsenal head coach told Sky Sports.

‘It’s a really complicated window with the pandemic and the way the football world is at the moment so we’ll see how things develop.’
